Hermes's Hot Wheels
January 2009
For the lucky few who have managed to stay afloat during the economic
crisis, French automaker Bugatti is releasing a $2 million model of its
Veyron car—which usually goes for a mere $1.25 million—that’s codesigned
by Hermès. The French fashion house covered every inch of the car’s
interior with calfskin, measured the leather-lined trunk to fit a
specially created Hermès suitcase and even worked interlocking H’s onto
the grille. Five buyers from Europe, America and the Middle East have
already laid down the $377,000 deposit, according to worldwide sales
director Alasdair Stewart, who expects to sell between five and eight of
the special-order speedsters, which take approximately 10 months to
manufacture. “Our very rich customers may have lost a little [in the
stock market],” Stewart says, “but they still have a lot of money.”
