As creative director of Dior Homme from 2000 to 2007, Hedi Slimane pioneered a lean, mean, louche aesthetic that revolutionized men’s fashion. But he isn’t rushing to do it again. “I will design when I find a project that makes sense for me,” he says. In the meantime, Slimane’s focus has been on photography, a pursuit he took up at age 11 when, after spending hours peering longingly into a camera store in Paris, he received a Nikon FM from his parents. Much like his designs, his photos—which range from action stills of kids at rock concerts to close-ups of his Rolls-Royces—reveal an entirely original vision. Anthology of a Decade, a four-volume, 800-page boxed set, due out March 1, compiles the designer’s most defining images of the past 10 years. “It gives some record of my attempts in the fields of design and photography,” says Slimane, who also has two shows opening in February. One is of his work, and the other he curated; they are at Almine Rech Gallery in Brussels and Paris, respectively. As for the editing process, the well-known perfectionist found it a “nightmare,” he says. “I have millions of negatives to still explore, but that might be for another lifetime.”
