The perils of bad lighting

The perils of bad lighting.

Evil Glare

April 2008

These days even a brief walk outside requires slathering on SPF 60 and wearing a hat the size of a flying saucer. But according to a new study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, you’re not safe inside, either. Dermatologist Vermén M. Verallo-Rowell writes that indoor light sources like halogen bulbs, fluorescent lights and even that eerie glow from our computer screens can cause hyperpigmentation and possible skin damage. “Indoor lights are low intensity, but we are indoor people most of the time,” says Verallo-Rowell. Naturally, she’s developed a line of sunscreens for her skincare brand, VMV Hypoallergenics, packed with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which give complete indoor and outdoor protection.
