There’s always a risk of looking a bit cartoony when doing a retro look, but it really worked on some of the younger set. Nicole Ritchie’s fountain-head pony conjured up Barbara Eden’s I Dream of Jeanie hair, but it was done so beautifully—and supported with understated makeup—that it looked quite elegant. Zooey Deschanel seemed to drop the Loretta Lynn tease she had going to a TV darling That Girl Marlo Thomas. Julie Bowen, on the other hand, should stick to contemporary. That woman rocks the understated sexy look like no one else, but if her attempt was Mad Men, it missed the mark, landing somewhere between Donna Reed and Marilyn from The Munsters.
