A Bit of Rouge

Actress Stephanie March teams up with her SVU makeup artist on a beauty bar

Rebecca Perkins and Stephanie March bonded on the set of “Law and Order: SVU”, where Perkins ran the makeup department and March starred as Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot. “You have to have a good amount of trust in the person who’s doing your makeup,” says March. “You have to be comfortable. I have super sensitive skin—and I am sensitive to the amount of time it takes to make me up, particularly with a 5:30 a.m. call time! All I wanted was someone who was skilled, calm, and respected my time. The instant I met Becca I knew I could sit back and let her take over.”

The bond has proven strong. Two years after leaving the show, the two have teamed up again to open Rouge New York, a six-chair makeup bar in New York’s SoHo. Offering a menu of makeup looks (You…Only Better, Bold Choice, Total Polish), Rouge also offers false lash application, tattoo cover, and brow and lip waxing.  “Why do men get to sit in a relaxed, classic environment sipping a whiskey and getting a shave while women are forced to sit in the middle of a mall or facing the street with wax on their lip during grooming services?” reasons March, who says a Campari cocktail will be served to all age-appropriate clients. As the two furiously prepare the space for its December 11th opening, they point out a tiny bullet hole in the corner of the storefront window. “A sign will fill the whole window, so no one’s going to notice it,” says Perkins. “But we’re thinking of keeping it—a little Law and Order DNA.”
