W's beauty director gives directions on how to wear the buttercream-like lip gloss that frosted every mouth on the runway.
At the Christian Dior fall 2013 couture show, the makeup artist Pat McGrath created the models’ dazzling pouts using various shades of deep pink lip color embedded with Swarovski crystals that were secured with theatrical glue—not something we recommend you try at home. Happily, there are other options. In recent months, cosmetic companies have been turning out notice-me textures for lips inspired by plush velvet, glossy car paint, and even cake frosting. Tom Ford, Laura Mercier, and Dior are all offering takes on the latter, with glosses that have the consistency of buttercream and impart an almost holographic sheen. In a dark shade like Mercier’s Brilliant Glacé in Rose Prism, seen here, a statement lip is achieved with a single swipe. No liner—or glue—required.
