Metallic eyeliner is the best New Year's Eve look of all.
Eye-catching eyeliner—from New York Fashion Week’s lip gloss-on-lids trend to Glossier’s new foil liners—is an unexpected way to make a beauty statement. The key to pulling off this eye, explains Ricky Wilson, the makeup artist behind the futuristic look here, is to start with Dior’s new Mirror Eye adhesive liners ($61, dior.com) and keep everything else clean and simple. After perfecting skin with Diorskin Star Foundation and Concealer ($36, sephora.com), he applied black shadow from the brand’s Bar 56 palette ($60, sephora.com) in a sweeping motion to create a “fusion between a smoky eye and a cat eye.” He then lined eyes liberally with Waterproof Eyeliner in Trinidad Black ($29, sephora.com), and added a single coat of black mascara. As for the mirrors themselves, the artist suggests bending them slightly to match the contour of the eye and applying them from the outside in to ensure a uniform look. “And you always want to allow your adhesive a little time to become tacky before you just pop it on the eye,” he adds. “Just like with false lashes.” Another tip? Should you decide you need a bit more drama, the liners’ material is non-stick, allowing eyeshadow to be applied right on top without ruining the effect. “It’s New Year’s Eve,” says Wilson matter-of-factly. “You really want to amp it up.” Just add somewhat messy, voluminous hair, and a chic, menswear-inspired top and you’re good to go.
