The New Neutral
Playing fast and loose with neutral makeup.
Dick Page is not a man who bows to beauty convention. The makeup artist loves a vibrant lime eyelid, a scarlet-fever cheek, and a shoe polish– black brow. Even when it comes to neutrals, that bastion of makeup-world safety, he plays fast and loose. “I love the wonkiness of ochre,” he says of the yellowish pale brown that he used here on the model Hannelore Knuts. “It comes from skin tone, but it goes deeper and stranger.” Not only did he choose an unexpected hue, but he also put it in an unexpected place: below her lower lids. “Who makes the rules of what makeup goes where?” asks Page, who mixed Shiseido Luminizing Satin Face Color in Soft Beam Gold with Shiseido Bronzer in Dark. “Why not go darker under the eye—and look like you have a book in your life?”
