A modern face needs a bold pout and nothing more.
When Coco Chanel advised women to look in the mirror and take at least one thing off, she was talking about accessories. But now more than ever, the adage applies to makeup too. There’s something powerfully modern about a single feature—a bold lip, a heavily lined eye—against a bare background. And we do mean bare: no blush, no mascara, not even a hint of shadow. Here, makeup artist Maxine Leonard let the mouth sing solo, painting it with Dolce & Gabbana’s Matte Lipstick in Jealous, a deep aubergine that’s just one of several supersaturated lip hues debuting for spring. “When the rest of the face is naked, it emphasizes the color choice,” says Leonard, who allowed a few dots of concealer but nothing more. “The bravery comes in seeing skin’s real texture.”
