My competitive spirit was alive and literally kicking during my family’s recent weeklong stay at fitness retreat Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, Mexico (rancholapuerta.com). Team Jane— I secretly referred to our clan this way—dominated in the water polo tournament, and I felt a bit longer and leaner thanks to Pilates classes led by our guest instructor, San Francisco–based Amber Zuckswert, and to the Spanx Power Pant ($118, spanx.com), into which I stuffed my lower half (above). My lucky stepdaughter tested out a new pair of Vibram FiveFingers KomodoSport LS shoes (above, right, $110, vibramfivefingers.com), taking them running, hiking, even dancing, with such enthusiasm that I began to wonder whether she’s part platypus. And I got to check out the Nike + FuelBand ($149, nike.com), which converts activity into points that count toward a daily goal that you preset. The device definitely pushed me to make it through the seven- mile morning hikes and back-to-back yoga, boot camp, and Pilates classes to reach my goal. Too bad it didn’t give points for sleep.
