W's beauty director changes her tune on lip pencils.
I never use a lip pencil, because I worry I’ll end up with that all-too-obvious outline effect. But François Nars has inspired me to sharpen my skills. Backstage at the Marc Jacobs fall 2015 runway show, he showed me how he colored in the models’ mouths using Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu, instead of one of his myriad Nars lipsticks. “People usually use pencil for precision of the lip shape, but I did it here to emphasize the intensity of the shade,” he explained. “Think of the way Diana Vreeland applied her makeup. It’s more like a signal—and there’s a softness to the shape.” Now all I need is the pucker of a 20-year-old model.
