Young Guns
After Proenza Schouler’s Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough sold a stake in their business to Valentino in July, the boys decided to whoop it up in Los Angeles. Director Mark Romanek and his wife, Brigette, hosted a young Hollywood–heavy bash for the designing duo at their artsy home in Los Feliz. Ryan Gosling, Mary-Kate Olsen, Joaquin Phoenix, Kate Bosworth, China Chow, Rosetta Getty and Kelly Lynch sipped cocktails and smoked by the pool (leaving the spread of food mostly untouched), while Jeremy Scott took a self-guided tour of the Romaneks’ abode, which they had moved into less than a year before and were still fixing up. “We were putting up tile two hours before guests started arriving,” said Brigette.
A week later on a sultry New York night, Rag & Bone’s Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, John Legend, Amanda Brooks and a mix of fashion editors christened Phillip Lim’s new store in SoHo. Despite the failing AC system, the boutique was bursting at the seams as fans toasted the budding design darling. Debra Messing, for one, was psyched for the excuse to don one of Lim’s frocks. “I wanted to wear this white dress of his to a premiere, but people kept telling me that white doesn’t work for television,” she said.
When asked about his appeal among Hollywooders, the designer was succinct. “I refine them without defining them,” Lim said.
That works for Catalina Sandino Moreno. “I like fashion, but I’m not a fashion slave,” explained the actress, who had never met Lim. “I’m too shy to just go up and introduce myself. Maybe after a couple more of these,” she said with a nod toward her flute of Veuve Clicquot.
