Hamptons Hush

Asked why she doesn’t attend Super Saturday, Jessica Seinfeld replied, “Because it’s not at my house.”

October 2008

Each summer, the New York party train chugs out to the Hamptons, where every weekend promises another big scenic bash. But this season, something seemed off. There was the usual number of events, if not more, but the glam factor was nowhere near on par with previous years. As various observers love to ponder, are the Hamptons finally, like, so over?

Consider that the biggest names this year at Robert Wilson’s always inventive Watermill Center benefit, once a must-attend, were Kim Cattrall and Rufus Wainwright. Simon de Pury, despite his best efforts, was unable to rustle up much cash from the crowd during the event’s live auction. Vanessa Weiner von Bismarck did shell out $30,000 for a champion horse, which she plans to breed in Texas, but the stud was valued at $120,000.

Earlier that day, fashion fiends had flocked to Super Saturday for discounted designer goods. But with the exception of a few stylish women like Christy Turlington Burns and Gabby Karan DeFelice, the sale was glutted with an odd mix of shoppers that included reality-TV stars (two of New York’s Real Housewives among them), Kelsey Grammer, and Mexican actress and pop star Thalia. Even sponsor Donna Karan was absent, off vacationing in Africa with Calvin Klein.

During a Tod’s-sponsored luncheon for her Baby Buggy charity the next week, Jessica Seinfeld said, “Kelly Ripa asked me why I don’t go to Super Saturday. I told her because it’s not at my house.” Maybe that’s it: Everyone was just staying home.

But when Seinfeld did entertain at her Amagansett estate, she drew the most stellar crowd of the summer. Gwyneth Paltrow, Diane Kruger, Tracy Pollan and Gossip Girl’s Kelly Rutherford shopped Derek Lam’s fall collection for Tod’s—which was on display in the barn—before sitting down to lunch.

As waiters brought barely touched plates of grilled shrimp and fresh corn and tomato salad back into the kitchen, Seinfeld, who was hosting a different group for dinner that evening, said, “I keep wanting to ask what they’re doing with the leftovers.”
