“I’m a beast on the microphone,” said Foxy Brown.
Held during September Fashion Week, the fifth annual Fashion Rocks, hosted by Condé Nast Media Group (the publishers of W), drew a star-studded crowd. In Fashion’s corner: designers Vera Wang, Max Azria, Tommy Hilfiger and Valentino, as well as stylish Hollywooders Hilary Swank and Taylor Momsen. Representing Rocks: Mariah Carey, Mary J Blige, Kid Rock, Rihanna, Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake. The former boy-bander’s performance had the crowd at Radio City Music Hall on its feet and sent the women in attendance into a tizzy. “Justin’s the bomb,” said Blige, “and very, very cute.” After the show, guests headed to the Rainbow Room.
The following night Alexander Wang threw his postshow soirée in a Chinatown basement. The designer arrived wearing a Hooters T-shirt (“We tried to go there after the show, but they wouldn’t honor our reservation, so we went to McDonald’s instead,” he said) but soon stripped down to a tank top—the easier to dance in as Foxy Brown took the stage. The former jailhouse rapper, who is starring in an upcoming VH1 reality show, told the cameras afterward that she was calm before her set. “I’m a beast on the microphone,” she boasted. “I was more nervous about busting my ass in these six-inch Yves Saint Laurent heels.”
The next evening Calvin Klein threw Fashion Week’s most anticipated party—a $5 million 40th anniversary bash at the Highline. Architect John Pawson and artist James Turrell transformed the space into a serene, lantern-lit pier, and Estelle crooned a tribute to the design house: “Start spreading the news/This Calvin Klein suit is here to stay.”
Though the brand’s founder wasn’t present, its 1980 spokeswoman was. And during the past few decades, Brooke Shields admitted, certain things have indeed come between her and her Calvins. “I’ve had two kids,” she said. “You fill in the blanks.”
