Jewel of the Isle

In Ibiza, famous playground of the original haute hippies, Jade Jagger is raising her family—and raising the roof.

Jade Jagger, tan and languid, stretches out on a canopied daybed by the pool. It’s a Saturday afternoon in Jagger’s personal paradise, high above the blue sea in Ibiza, Spain. Her jewels, rings, necklaces, bracelets—all treasures from Garrard, where she serves as creative director—blaze in the sun. She props herself up on an elbow and lets out a shrill dance-floor trill that sends her pack of dogs tearing toward their mistress. There’s no question that here, where giant disco balls hang from the palm trees and guests sleep in teepees pitched behind her 500-year-old Spanish farmhouse, Jagger is queen of all she surveys.

Appropriately enough, her own enchanted compound isn’t too far from Tanit’s cave, a shrine to the ancient goddess of sex, love and war whom Carthaginians worshipped on the island circa 550 BC. Some centuries earlier, Ibiza itself had been named after a king of carnal pleasures, Bes, the Phoenician god of sex, love and dancing. During the Sixties and Seventies, the Spanish isle’s racy exoticism—and its easygoing inhabitants—wowed Joni Mitchell, Robert Plant, Joan Baez and Frank Zappa, among others. These days, any pleasure seeker who thrills to that hedonistic legacy is more likely to be, say, a teenage British hooligan surfing the airport’s baggage carousel with a bottle of vodka tucked into his pants. But hidden away in its own private Eden, Jagger’s hilltop spread preserves some of the wild beauty and the decadent vibe that lured Carthaginian freethinkers and modern rock icons to Ibiza in the first place. And there couldn’t be a more likely place for the complicated daughter of Michael P. Jagger, the infamously seductive Mick, and his onetime Nicaraguan ice princess, Bianca, to rule. Behind old stone walls, a thicket of fig trees, cacti and masses of flowers buzzing with bees, Jagger, her two daughters, Assisi, 12, and Amba, nine, her boyfriend of four years, Dan Williams, and his seven-year-old son, Ty, as well as the family’s six frisky dogs, live a bohemian dream—though Jagger doesn’'t like the “b” word. A whiff of spicy incense greets visitors at the door. There’s a well-thumbed copy of Yogasana and Pranayama for Health on the bookshelf. And a guest is likely to find Jagger walking around barefoot or making tea with verbena picked fresh from the kitchen garden. But she insists she’s no hippie.
