A preview of Art Basel Miami Beach 2015.
The annual bacchanal that is Art Basel Miami Beach gets under way in December with an array of events intended to lure viewers away from the frenzy of the main fair. A disco roller rink on the beach, designed by the Brazilian Eli Sudbrack, who is one half of the duo Assume Vivid Astro Focus (AVAF), kicks off the opening of the Faena Hotel on December 1. Free and open to the public, the rink will be fired up by a curated lineup of DJs. At NADA, one of several concurrent alternative art fairs, the nonprofit U.K.-based gallery Studio Voltaire opens its largest-ever stand-alone House of Voltaire pop-up shop, presenting limited editions by leading artists, with proceeds going to the gallery’s education programs. Look for eye-catching blankets designed by Sanya Kantarovsky and Ella Kruglyanskaya. At the Rubell Family Collection, “100%” (opening December 2) celebrates the work of 70 women artists and includes commissions from Jennifer Guidi and Sonia Gomes. In the Design District, Louis Vuitton presents its latest collection of “Objets Nomades”—foldable, transportable furniture by cutting-edge designers—in the brand’s new in-store exhibition space. For live performance, don’t miss the enterprising artist Ryan McNamara, who is teaming with the musician Devonté Hynes to create Dimensions, an allegory about Miami’s history as a place of fantasy (December 3, at the Pérez Art Museum Miami). Of course, what would a round-the-clock art party be without selfies? For those, you’d be advised to head to Swarovski’s installation at Design Miami, opening December 2, for a glimpse of the architect Fernando Romero’s enormous geodesic sphere, El Sol, fashioned from 2,880 custom-made crystals. And you can take the spectacle to go: Swarovski will be handing out clip-on crystals that can be attached to the lens of any smartphone.Follow Us:
