The Female Gaze
Radicalism in art, as in life, tends to mellow over time. So if you, like some corners of the Internet, find the 21-year old photographer Petra Collins’ pictures of nubile teens especially titillating, you should really brace yourself for the brazen sexuality of her feminist forebears Collier Schorr and Betty Tompkins, two women who have perfected the art of looking at other women with a gaze that can only be described as unflinching.
“Petra Collins: Discharge” is on view through April 27th at New York’s Capricious 88 Gallery; “Collier Schorr: 8 Women” runs through April 12th at New York’s 303 Gallery; and Betty Tompkins is part of the group show “Aftershock: The Impact of Radical Art,” from March 3rd through May 12th at New York’s Edelman Arts.
