Forever Barbie

March 2009

She still has her girlish figure and spends most of her days with five-year-olds, but believe it or not, Barbie is turning 50 this year. To celebrate, parent company Mattel is spoiling her—and her many fans—with a series of glam gifts. In January the company opened a Barbie flagship in Shanghai, featuring all sorts of Barbie merch, including a new line of beauty products for adults. In February Mattel staged a runway show during New York Fashion Week, with 50 designers—among them, Diane von Furstenberg, Marchesa and Derek Lam—creating Barbie-inspired outfits, all accessorized with Barbie-pink Christian Louboutin pumps. “I guess I always had a little girly side who liked Barbie,” Louboutin said.
