Alexander McQueen: Good Sport

May 2009

One designer who is not taking any chances in these tricky times? That would be Alexander McQueen, who has added yet another undertaking to his already hefty workload. In addition to his ready-to-wear and diffusion labels, a footwear collection for Puma and this spring’s Target collaboration, he’s now debuting the Alexander McQueen Puma men’s and women’s apparel and accessories line. For fall 2009, he found inspiration in the boxing ring. “McQueen is about feeling powerful, and so are sports,” said the British designer. “Boxing is a historic sport, with deep roots in the UK, but it is still modern and relevant today.”

The collection, which retails for $50 to $500 and which will be sold on puma.com, at the brand’s store in New York’s Meatpacking District and at a handful of select boutiques, includes track jackets, knit dresses and high-waisted pants. The boxing theme shows up in details like silky hoods (reminiscent of a fighter’s robes) and gloves that mimic a boxer’s wrapped hands. Subsequent seasons will reference different sports. Wrestling singlets for spring, perhaps?
