A pale 19-year-old boy with braces, 3.89 pounds to his name and a penchant for red lipstick, greasepaint eye makeup, and glitter makes for an unlikely performance art ingenue. But Theo Adams is nevertheless one of the London avant-garde's most celebrated new phenomena. A lover of Philip Glass and Celine Dion, Bob Fosse and reality television, Wagner's operas and Greek musicals, he refuses to label his cultural inspirations in terms of "high" or "low." Which renders it fitting that Adams and his posse of dancers, musicians and muses (including Lorna Luft), photographed in an abandoned Catholic missionary school in northwest London, inhabit couture and leather with equal passion in these pages.
