Mark Ryden's "Old Tyme" opening
The debut of Mark Ryden’s new show at Paul Kasmin gallery last week was not your typical Chelsea opening. For one, many of the cult artist’s fans came out to see Ryden’s new paintings and works on paper —“The Gay 90′s: Old Tyme Art Show” —dressed in “Old Tyme” 1890s-style garb. (One guest walking on stilts wearing a massive gown made of large replica pieces of meat was truly a sight to behold.) Ryden’s big-eyed, doll-like heroines never lose their impassive expressions, whether they’re lying across on Jesus’s grand piano, purchasing meat from Abraham Lincoln, or wearing a dress made of of raw meat and sausage links.
