Rebel Heart

blog-rebel-denim-01.jpg Since its founding two years ago, the New York–based denim line R13 has summoned the nation’s revolutionary spirit with a rugged aesthetic akin to decades-old Levi’s (the brand’s name refers to the rattlesnake on the so-called Gadsden flag, which represented the 13 colonies with the slogan “Don’t Tread on Me”). For fall the brand has added World War One–inspired outerwear, such as a selvage canvas biker jacket with an oversize fur collar and a sleek leather trenchcoat. And in an apropos twist, the label’s designer maintains a Margiela-like anonymity, referencing the storied American work ethic in his refusal to be named. “I’m afraid of having my 15 minutes of fame and then being replaced by the next new thing,” he says. “I get a kick from a job well done—isn’t that the American way?” (r13denim.com)
