High Water Mark
In a new memoir Swimming Studies (Blue Rider Press), girl crush-worthy author and artist Leanne Shapton looks back on her lifelong relationship with the water. Vignettes borrow from Shapton’s stint as a competitive swimmer—she swam in the Canadian Olympic trials twice—and her unshakable adult connection to the athletic practice that once ruled her youth. Weaving in anecdotes of past and present relationships and a series of illustrations (above), Shapton relates the countless laps she swims to the patience and dedication required for her artistic progress. It’s the perfect beach read.
Swimming Studies is out July 5th. ($30, amazon.com)
