“A retrospective,” Yohji Yamamoto (left) once observed, “is just proof of all your mistakes.” Befitting the 68-year- old designer’s forward-looking mind-set, “Yohji Yamamoto,” opening at the Design Museum Holon in Israel on July 5 (through October 20), will not be a survey but rather “a dialogue,” says curator Galit Gaon, between Yamamoto’s sharply sculptural clothes and the free curves of the museum.

The vortex-like structure—designed by Ron Arad, who was responsible for Yamamoto’s Y’s store in Tokyo—will act as aesthetic foil for the more than 80 men’s and women’s pieces from the designer’s archive. “These conflicts and harmonies between my work and those of architects,” Yamamoto says, “are interesting to me.”
