Mirror Moves | Doug Aitken at the Seattle Art Museum

The artist Doug Aitken is a pioneer of “videotecture,” a hybrid form that marries film and architecture and takes full and often dazzling advantage of exhibition space that many museums were probably never even aware they had. In 2007, he projected “Sleepwalkers,” his monumental multi-channel ode to New York City, on the exterior walls of then newly expanded Museum of Modern Art. Last spring his 360 degree video SONG1 animated the exterior of the Gordon Bunshaft designed Hirshhorn Museum building in Washington D.C. This weekend, Aitken puts his stamp on the Seattle Art Museum with his kaleidoscopic work MIRROR. And while this installation will be permanent, the piece, which responds to the energy and movement of its surroundings, is as dynamic and mutable as the urban landscape. Here, a video preview.
