W’s features editor explains how she came to love Hawaiian shirts.
I always thought Hawaiian shirts were so kitschy—until I saw them on the Prada men’s spring runway. Now I think they’re entirely cool, and rather beautiful (Miuccia Prada has a way of making you think twice that way), and I’m saving my pennies to buy one of the Hawaiian dresses from the Prada resort collection. In the meantime, I’ve been keeping my eye out for authentic, non-designer versions, and very nearly accosted the stylist Keegan Singh the other night when I saw him wearing the perfect shirt—black with big white hibiscus flowers. He got it three years ago on a family vacation to Maui; it’s from a place called the Hula Grill. Who knows, I might just make a trip over there to pick one up. According to Singh they also serve killer fish tacos.
