Behind the Scenes of “Privacy Settings”
Find out more about the supermodel cast here.
For today’s top models, social media stats are the only “measurements” that count—something that the supermodel super stars of “Privacy Settings,” know all too well.“You put your image out there on social media every day and you share a little bit of yourself with the world,” explains British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who has 3.4 million Instagram followers. It’s really a full-time job, adds Chrissy Teigen, who has 2.4 million Instagram followers. “I check my phone all night. It’s either underneath my pillow or within a foot my reach. It’s always near me.”
And so, this super famous cast of supermodels—including Irina Shayk, Emily Ratajkowski, Barbara Palvin, Lily Aldridge, and Doutzen Kroes—was a perfect fit for #ThePopIssue, W’s August 2015 issue celebrating pop culture and social media. “The supermodels featured in ‘Privacy Settings’ know exactly how to engage their followers and keep them hooked,” says W’s Editor in Chief Stefano Tonchi in his editor’s letter. And according to W’s Fashion and Style Director Edward Enninful this is a good thing. “Models are no longer silent screen stars: through social media,” he says, “they have a voice and they are empowered to express themselves.” For “Privacy Settings,” Enninful teamed up with photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott to shoot the supermodels who do social media best as ultra-sexy pinups, owning their own image. “I like to be comfortable in my own skin, so it’s cool to be able to do shoot like that,” says Bella Hadid. Joan Smalls agrees. “It’s natural to me.” Rosie Huntington-Whiteley added, “When you’re shooting nude, there’s always a sense of empowerment.”
