Keeping Score: New York Fashion Week Fall 2014 Day 4
Designers of the Instagram age rejoice
Hell hath no fury like Alexander. On the fourth day of New York Fashion Week, Alexander Fury, The Independent fashion critic basically anointed by Eric Wilson as his acid-penned heir, called Victoria Beckham’s Fall 2014 collection derivative of Céline after deeming her a “designer of the Instagram age”: “With David, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper in the front row, the cameras tend to be diverted from the catwalk.” Well, yes, it may be “a truth universally acknowledged that if David, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper Beckham make a public appearance together, it will be virtually impossible to get anyone present to pay attention to anything else,” but if front-row regulars David and Harper—and poppa Beckham’s Burberry-suited brood making their runway-side debut—were busy snapping selfies, they didn’t post them. That honor went to DKNY campaign star Rita Ora, who uploaded a photo of herself in the street style scrum outside the brand’s 25th anniversary show wearing a leather jacket emblazoned with the words “When I wear DKNY I feel like a BAD B*TCH,” and “an hour later that single image has already clocked up 27,572 likes on Instagram,” as Vogue.com noted. And don’t forget the social clout of younger Millennials: the newest Disney Channel alumna and fellow DKNY FROWer Zendaya (2.8M Insta fans) ‘grammed her more PG than PG-13 pant suit look and had garnered 136,345 likes at press time.
