Dr. John

It’s true that he now lives in New York, but Dr. John—born Malcolm John Rebennack Jr.—remains a New Orleans original, no matter where he hangs his familiar snap-brim fedora. The pianist and singer-songwriter was raised in the Mid-City neighborhood and got his start playing studio sessions and French Quarter strip joints. His music, a mash-up of rhythm and blues, rock and hoodoo funk, is deeply anchored in the city’s musical past. He’s currently at work on a collaboration with fellow New Orleans legend Aaron Neville.
