Andrea Mary Marshall: Calendar Girl

A photographer who works mostly in self-portraiture, Andrea Mary Marshall is a wizard with a self-timer. Like Cindy Sherman and Hannah Wilke, Marshall uses her body as a medium to explore female sexuality and its relationship to media. For her latest project, the New York-based photographer addresses one paragon of sexuality, the annual Pirelli Calendar, by creating her own. Marshall’s responsive calendar, The Feminist, answers the objectifying lens of the original with photographs that embody sexual self-determination. “I’m fascinated by the way women’s bodies are used to sell sex,” explained Marshall, who pairs her explicit portraits with a series of demure parallels. “But can you sell yourself the other way? I wanted to explore what that would look like. There are no judgments here. Both sides of the calendar speak to me.”

Marshall’s calendar debuts October 15th and will be available at Garis & Hahn, where corresponding show will be on view until November 14.
