Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them at Armory Week 2017

Among everyone hungry for a deal at the Independent, one of the fairs currently occupying New York during Armory Week, one figure in particular has stood out this week: a towering, hairy beast constructed by the Brooklyn-based artist Stefan Tcherepnin. Though it stands sentinel in a booth belonging to Galerie Francesca Pia, it’s hardly been the only member of the animal kingdom to cause a scene in the art world lately, especially on the heels (hooves?) of Bjarne Melgaard‘s army of miniature pigs. While actual dogs roamed the halls of both the Independent and NADA New York, in the booths, untethered by leashes, there was another kind of zoo—ranging from a flock of golden flamingos to a disembodied boar’s head to a lifeless, skinned fish. (Looks like Frieze isn’t the only fair that’s animal-friendly). Get a look at the week’s cutest fairgoers, here.
