Boris Mikhailov: Four Decades

From Crimean Snobbism (Series) 1981

Sometimes, the only appropriate response to devastating bleakness is humor. The Soviet-era photographer Boris Mikhailov understood this as well as anyone in chronicling the lives of citizens on the fringes of society during the height, decline, and aftermath of the USSR. “Four Decades,” a retrospective of his work opening tonight at Dominique Lévy Gallery in New York, captures both the blight of real life and the zany fantasies necessary to endure it.

“Boris Mikhailov: Four Decades” runs through February 8, 2014, at Dominique Lévy Gallery, 909 Madison Avenue in New York.
