From the sculptural pieces on the runway to the presence of the Met’s curator Andrew Bolton – and the continued hint of who might be the focus of the Met Gala’s next fashion exhibit – in the front row, art blended even further than usual with fashion at Comme des Garçons‘s show for spring 2017. While Rei Kawakubo kept it typically tight with just 18 looks, many of the giant geometric forms she showed, which could only nominally be described as coats and dresses, were large enough that she could have tripled the number of models in them if she pleased. Instead, the 74-year-old designer let them stand, and kept it cheeky: She titled the collection “Invisible Clothes” – never mind that the only glimpse some garments, like a ruffled, face-obscuring monolith-turned-cocoon, provided of their wearers was a simple sliver of their calves.
