With daylight saving time upon us, the moment is right to take those mitts out of our mittens. Read recent interviews with celebrity manicurists Naomi Yasuda and Madeline Poole and then dive into the W archives for some of the most striking nail inspirations from the past. Backstage at fashion week and beyond, these are some talons to aspire to.

Take a beauty cue from your jewels, à la this manicure by Tracylee and coordinating Verdura cuff. “Right on the Nail,” photographed by David Slijper, styled by Patrick Mackie; W magazine October 2014.

Mad Max for your nails: A two-toned shimmer channels the war boys’ Valhalla spray for your nails instead of your lips. Backstage at Creatures of the Wind Spring 2015, photography by Olivia Locher; W magazine September 2014.

Nothing can steal the spotlight from these nails, manicured with Dior Vernis in Nymphéa. “Purple Gaze,” photographed by Ben Hassett, styled by Patrick Mackie; W magazine March 2013.

Manicurist Anatole Rainy calls himself a “classicist,” but we’re still all about these gold Dior nails. “Electric Company,” photographed by Richard Burbridge, styled by Vanessa Chow; W magazine May 2014.

Liquid silver talons make a perfect pair with midi rings by Balenciaga. “Lady Killer,” photographed by Emma Summerton, styled by Edward Enninful; W magazine March 2013.

Exude old-school glamour with long, champagne-colored nails paired with a fresh coif. “The Wild One,” photographed by Santiago & Mauricio, styled by Lindsey Frugier; W magazine January 2014.

The absence of color can be just as impactful as any bright orange or gold. Naomi Cambell in “The New Royals,” photographed by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, styled by Edward Enninful; W magazine October 2014.

This probably wasn’t what Rodin was envisioning when he created “Le Penseur.” “Art and Commerce,” photographed by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, styled by Alex White; W magazine October 2009.
