A Cinematic Experience At Iris Van Herpen Fall 2016
A designer known for the sculptural quality of her garments, Iris Van Herpen played with yet another dimension — technology — for her Paris Fashion Week Fall 2016 presentation. Her trademark laser-cuts and 3D-printed designs abounded, models and garments refracted through thin screens (the same kind used in television projection technology) that altered the viewer's perception of, and interaction with, the classic runway show. As models moved down the runway with choreography by filmmaker-dancer Bianca Li, the screens resulted in a doubling of each image they projected, collapsing the distinction between cinema and reality. Or, as Van Herpen termed the show, creating a kind of lucid dream.
