Mulberry’s Floral Caftans Are Not Your Grandmother’s Muumuus
It’s been almost exactly a year since the Spanish designer Johnny Coca made his ready-to-wear debut at Mulberry, effectively resurrecting the British house with what he’d previously established as his speciality: envy-inducing accessories, like the Trapeze bags he designed for Céline. Increasingly, though, the clothes are starting to stand out for the brand, too. This season, they consisted of oversized, unabashedly British tweed dresses and blazers, duvet-like quilted ponchos and sweaters, and even massive leather caftans, all accented by purple knee-high boots, rich floral embroidery, kelly green eyeshadow, and tent-like swaths of silk that bordered on muumuus.
