Virgil Abloh Mines False Facades For Off-White Spring 2017
Each season, Off-White designer Virgil Abloh chooses a title word or phrase that playfully captures the "vibe" — his word — of the collection. Last season, it was “You’re obviously in the wrong place,” which is a line from the film Pretty Woman. And for Spring 2017, it was "Mirror mirror," which is a reference specifically to Parisian architecture and "false facades," a phrase he dropped on Instagram before the show, per usual. With a P.h.D. in architecture, Abloh often uses construction and building as a metaphor in his collections. The runway set this season was draped in a huge canvas printed with a tromp l'ceil facade of a building and the collection was a mix of gothic motifs with modern fabrics and trendy silhouettes.
