The Exhibitionists

“I’m a world-famous photographer,” boasted Larry Fink.

Museum fetes are typically rather staid affairs—though there are always exceptions. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a scrum of young supporters turned the Temple of Dendur into something resembling a raging kegger. The bash, complete with blinding colored lights and a deafening bass line—though no actual kegs—was for the museum’s Apollo Circle (intended for the under-40 set). It was raucous enough to horrify Egyptologists—or at least the more established members of New York society. “I think I’m the oldest person here,” said Carolina Herrera, whose design house cosponsored the party.

Meanwhile, Larry Fink documented the antics but went unrecognized by most of the crowd. “I’m a world-famous photographer,” he crowed to one clueless guest. “My name is on the invitation.”

A few weeks later, the American Museum of Natural History’s annual gala had Tom Petty rocking out for a crowd that was notably heavy on TV personalities—among them Brian Williams, Conan O’Brien, Alec Baldwin, Amy Poehler and Seth Myers.

Finally, down on the Bowery, the New Museum opened its much anticipated new facility with the edgiest party of all. “I flew in just for this,” said Londoner Thandie Newton, who mixed with cohosts Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli of Calvin Klein, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Julianne Moore, Lance Armstrong, Pharrell Williams and Ashley Olsen. In keeping with the museum’s commitment to new art and new ideas, Raven O., a regular host at downtown club the Box, emceed a show that involved a pre-op transsexual, a bottle of booze and a naked rear end. Use your imagination. Or better yet, don’t.
