Bargain Hunters
Bette Midler took style counsel from Kate Moss on a handbag.
Claws often come out when there are hot deals to be had, but the fashion flock stayed civil in the face of deeply discounted goods at the biennial 7th on Sale gala in New York benefiting HIV/AIDS research and organizations. Jennifer Connelly, Kate Bosworth, Mary-Kate Olsen, Giambattista Valli, Liv Tyler, Narciso Rodriguez, Donna Karan and Blake Lively scoured the racks and kept it friendly.
While Bette Midler took style counsel from Kate Moss on a handbag, Barry Diller schemed with Oscar de la Renta (“Let’s buy Anna Wintour’s coat and resell it for more!” joked Diller). And Francisco Costa picked up some baby gifts. “I didn’t even know Ralph Lauren made bears,” he said, examining one of the cashmere creatures.
Decorated with wall tapestries and flaming torches, the party site, the 69th Regiment Armory, felt a little like Medieval Times. Fortunately the waiters in breeches served lobster and steak potpies and not huge mutton legs. The one-course dinner was refreshingly brief, as was the award ceremony announcing the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winners: Rogan Gregory won first prize, while Phillip Lim and Philip Crangi placed as runners-up.
There was even more shopping—although no slashed prices—across the pond, where Chloé hosted a dinner and runway show attended by Lily Allen, Camilla Al Fayed and Lillian von Stauffenberg. In homage to the spring collection’s Sea, Sex and Sun theme, Rena Sindi transformed the Shoreditch House’s rooftop pool into a tropical paradise, where guests were entertained by a three-piece band from Saint-Tropez.
