Bowled Over

“I prefer a swimmer’s body,” said Ellen Barkin at Dıane von Furstenberg’s Super Bowl party.

Anyone in fashion who likes football (and there are one or two) knows the only Fashion Week party to attend on Super Bowl Sunday is Diane von Furstenberg’s. Each year the designer brings a massive television screen to her downtown studio, but this season not everyone was watching. As Ellen Barkin quipped, quarterbacks aren’t her type. “I prefer a swimmer’s body,” she said.

Susan Sarandon isn’t a swooning fan either: “If they look better wearing a helmet than not, they’re made for football.”

As New York Giant David Tyree made a crucial catch in the final minutes, the crowd—which included Amy Smart, Anh Duong and Alba Clemente—roared. “We’re gonna win,” shouted the hostess, as “New York, New York” boomed from the speakers.

Things were more subdued at amfAR’s 10th annual gala dinner at Cipriani a few nights earlier. Despite a glitzy guest list that included honorees Carine Roitfeld and Julian Schnabel, the organization’s chairman, Kenneth Cole, admitted that it’s hard to raise funds in the midst of an economic downturn. “These are difficult times,” he said. “We’re going to convert tonight’s ticket price from dollars to euros so we can triple our budget.”

Matthew Mellon didn’t charge people to come to his 44th-birthday party at Socialista, but it still felt more like business than pleasure, what with all the publicists and fashion editors in attendance. “I’m not sure why we’re here,” one attendee said simply.

The guest of honor, however, was pleased at the crush of friends, family and fashionistas at the door. “I’m so moved by everyone who came,” he told them.
