Like migrating birds, every December an assortment of artists, gallerists, and power brokers (not to mention professional “plus ones”) converge in Miami for Art Basel. Collector, photographer, and all-around bon vivant Jean Pigozzi shares his snapshots—and insights—of the event.

Who: “Every major art dealer and collector on the planet; celebrities like Tilda Swinton, Pharrell Williams, Michael Stipe, and George Hamilton; designers including Stefano Pilati, Francisco Costa, Alber Elbaz, and Viktor & Rolf; architects John Pawson and David Adjaye; tennis player Serena Williams; an interdisciplinary assortment of party animals.”

What: “Art Basel Miami Beach.”

When: “December 1 to 4, 2010.”

Where: “Miami Beach.”

Why: “To showcase an international selection of top galleries and artists, and, needless to say, to have a tipple or 12 on the beach.”

What did you find most exciting about the fair? “‘Evolution,’ the second film in Marco Brambilla’s new series—absolutely brilliant, creative, and fun.”

People you were happiest to see: “The Rubell family. They are enthusiastic, warm, generous, and great collectors.”

Dead person you wish could have attended: “Andy Warhol. It would have been so interesting to be with him in Miami.”

Other dead person you wish could have been there: “Jean-Michel Basquiat.”

Best fashion moment: “Sexy Cuban girls in tight bikinis on the beach!”

Artistic discoveries of the week: “Young Japanese artists like Shimon Minamikawa, Kaoru Arima, Toshiyuki Konishi, and Satoshi Ohno.”

Best parties: “Jeffrey Deitch had the band LCD Soundsystem at his party on the beach.”

Overheard quote: “Too many parties, not enough time to see the art!”

Best gossip: “Apparently, Steve Cohen wants to buy the Mona Lisa.”

Best moment: “Lunch at Sultan Kabob, a small outdoor restaurant near Collins and 19th.”

Worst moment: “Going through security at JFK airport in New York.”

Hangover quotient: “I don’t know—I don’t drink a drop of wine or alcohol!”
