Richard Gere and Alec Baldwin Care About the Homeless

As they proved at the annual Artwalk NY auction.

What: The annual Artwalk NY auction, which benefits the Coalition For the Homeless, honoring Richard Gere, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, and artists Deborah Kass and Patricia Cronin.

When: Tuesday, November 17th

Where: The Metropolitan Pavilion in New York

Who: Jennifer Connelly, Paul Bettany, Peter Copping, Wes Gordon, Fran Lebowitz, Claire Distenfeld, Yvonne Force Villareal, and many others.

Why: The works by the likes of Christo, Tracey Emin, Alex Katz, Glenn Ligon, Ed Ruscha, and of course honoree Deborah Kass, which drew the highest bid of the night, went to help the homeless in New York. It’s an issue dear to Richard Gere, who even went so far as to portray a homeless man in the recent drama Time Out of Mind and brought his wattage to the cause. “It’s unbelievable, his star power,” Mary Brosnahan, the President of the Coalition, remarked at the podium. “I just witnessed a crush of women rubbing themselves against Richard Gere.” At which point, Alec Baldwin couldn’t help himself. He rushed the stage and took over. “Richard has been rubbing his body against women for years!” he declared. “Remember American Gigolo?” Gere stood up, as silver-foxy as ever. “Let’s start the bidding at $50,000!” Baldwin said.
