Mickey Sumner: Generation W
This Brit is making waves.
“I was once the world’s worst model,” jokes the actress Mickey Sumner. The 29-year-old Brit moved to New York in 2004 armed with a spot at Parsons the New School for Design and the intent to model but—like the wayward young women in Noah Baumbach’s Frances Ha, the 2012 coming-of-age comedy that turned Sumner into a rising star—no long-term plan. “I realized pretty quickly I had another calling,” says Sumner, who was taking acting lessons on the side. This summer she appeared in the gritty AMC crime series Low Winter Sun, and she will play the ultimate misfit who found her way in New York—the artist Patti Smith—in the upcoming film CBGB. “I definitely identify with her as someone who came here to pursue an artistic life—whatever that might mean.”
