Elodie Bouchez and Stephanie Danan
Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane isn’t the only French expat to put down roots in Los Angeles.
If you’re French, involved somehow in the arts, and spending time in L.A., you’ve likely been invited to Stephanie Danan’s house. The Montreal-born, Paris-raised designer, who founded the luxury basics line Co with her American boyfriend and baby-papa, Justin Kern, regularly hosts Moroccan feasts at her eclectically furnished midcentury home in the Hollywood Hills. Hedi Slimane has been there, and so have Charlotte Casiraghi and her fiancé, Gad Elmaleh, the “Jerry Seinfeld of French comedy,” as the French press has dubbed him. The actress Elodie Bouchez and her musician husband, Thomas Bangalter, of Daft Punk—who, as it happens, met at one of Danan’s parties—live just up the street. “L.A. has afforded me the wealth of dressing a beautiful table and having all these people over,” Danan says. “You just can’t entertain like that in Paris.” When Danan arrived in 1998 (along with Bouchez, her longtime friend), she felt like a pioneer. “I saw where I could bring something to the picture,” she says of her early days as a film producer—a role she still assumes for Co’s wildly entertaining fashion shorts. But, of course, that wasn’t the only enticement. “The sun, the heat, the nature, that kind of hippie way of life…” Bouchez notes. “I knew from the moment I got here that L.A. was my dream city.”
