The 1980s: Mia Wasikowska
Four actresses inhabit Four decades of fashion.
When Tim Burton cast Mia Wasikowska in Alice in Wonderland, he capitalized on her unique combination of vulnerability and inner fortitude. Wasikowska has the depth and range of a classic heroine: Her characters always see their way out of dark situations, and like many women who came of age in the eighties, Wasikowska has great reserves of strength at the ready. She is loud in a quiet way.
What is your favorite film from the eighties?
I love The Shining—especially the little kid, when he’s on his tricycle riding through the mansion. After I saw the movie, I Googled him to check on how he turned out in life. He’s thriving—I was relieved that he’s normal. And Crocodile Dundee is nostalgic for me. I’m from Australia, and I remember watching it when I was young. It was a world I knew.
What personality is most evocative of the decade to you?
Madonna. She’s the icon. She’s wholly her own person.
What’s your least favorite trend from that era?
I don’t like scrunchies—those hair bands. And in general, I don’t do big eighties hair—but my Alice in Alice in Wonderland had lots of big hair. I was kind of an eighties Alice.
