Don’t Miss: Tribeca Film Festival Edition

This April the Tribeca Film Festival enters its 12th year, unleashing a fresh crop of international, independent, and creative cinema to NYC’s movie buffs. From a documentary about the teen experience, to Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley’s turn as beloved singer Jeff Buckley, here are some of the films W is looking forward to.

Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini is the subject of The Director, a documentary that goes behind the scenes with the brand’s fabulous innovator. Fun fact: James Franco is credited as a co-producer—is there anything he doesn’t do? Rounding out the list of must-see documentaries are Teenage, director Matt Wolf’s long in-the-works film tracing the emergence of teenage culture; Lenny Cooke, by the Safdie brothers, which follows a basketball player who finds himself left behind as his peers achieve NBA success; and Zachary Heinzerling’s Cutie and the Boxer, a touching look at the complicated relationship between Lower East Side-based Japanese artist Ushio Shinohara and his wife, “Cutie.”

Narrative features always bring a mix of big names and unknowns, and Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight, the third in his Before series following the decades-long romance between Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, is at the top of many people’s lists. Greetings from Tim Buckley, follows late folk singer Jeff Buckley (Penn Badgley) as he plans a concert in honor his father, Tim, and co-stars W up-and-comer Imogen Poots. And when it comes to lesser-known directors, I’m particularly excited for the offerings from the filmmakers Matt Creed (Lily) and Daniel Carbone (Hide Your Smiling Faces).

The Tribeca Film Festival runs through April 17—April 28 in Lower Manhattan. For information and tickets visit: tribecafilm.com/festival
