Patrick McCarthy

Chairman, Editorial Director

In January 2006, Patrick McCarthy was named Chairman and Editorial Director of W magazine and Fairchild Fashion Group which is a division within Conde Nast Publications, its owner since 1999. Fairchild Fashion Group includes the titles Women's Wear Daily, DNR and Footwear News.

McCarthy has spent nearly his entire journalism career at Fairchild Publications. He began in 1977 as a reporter in the Washington DC bureau. A year later, he was transferred to London as the London Bureau Chief. In 1980 he went to Paris as Paris Bureau Chief of W and WWD, and in 1983 was appointed European Editor. In 1985 he returned to New York as the Editor of W and WWD. He became Executive Editor three years later, then in 1992 he was named Executive Vice President, Editorial for all Fairchild Publications, with special responsibility for WWD and W. On April 1, 1997, he succeeded John B. Fairchild as Chairman and Editorial Director of Fairchild Publications.

Mr. McCarthy received the 1994 Eugenia Sheppard Award for Fashion Journalism from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. During his tenure W magazine has received 13 National Magazine Award nominations, winning for Photo Portfolio/Photo Essay in 2004 and Photography in 1998 and 2006.
