“It all seems to be staying in place,” said Kate Hudson.
A slew of stars—of both the social and the Hollywood variety—lit up the lavish dinner that Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana hosted on the rooftop of New York’s Gramercy Park Hotel to celebrate the reopening of their Madison Avenue boutique. Well, calling it a dinner might be somewhat of an exaggeration. Some guests weren’t served their meals until 11:30 p.m., and a few didn’t bother to wait around. The night was more about ogling: Most of the crowd hovered around the celeb-packed center table, where Eva Mendes lit cigarettes off the silver candelabra while Rosario Dawson and Anne Hathaway engaged in some serious girl talk. Lisa Airan, Allison Sarofim and Alex Kramer came dressed to impress the Italian designers, while Kate Hudson—in a micro-micromini—followed a less-is-more ethos. “It all seems to be staying in place,” she said, sighing with relief. Hockey star Sean Avery chatted up Charlotte Ronson, while Tatiana Santo Domingo, Lauren Davis and Barbara Bush gabbed the night away at the next table. By one o’clock, Hudson showed no signs of tiring, sipping Patrón with old friend Matthew McConaughey. A week later and a few thousand miles away, Ann Getty orchestrated an ultraglamorous birthday party for her composer husband, Gordon, at their San Francisco manse, with musical acts, including a jazz band and a Japanese punk trio, performing in every room. The Italianate atrium was transformed into a disco, replete with silver Mylar-lined walls, tanned go-go dancers and booming speakers that rattled the Matisses and Utrillos in the adjacent drawing room. Party planner Stanlee Gatti frosted archways with what must have been every pink rose grown in Ecuador, and the tented garden, with its mini replica of the Taj Mahal, was turned into a blue grotto, complete with a caviar and vodka bar and a Milky Way of twinkling lights. “It’s pure enchantment,” said Alexis Traina.
