“I’m always thinking about the same things,” said Julian Schnabel. “Life. Death. Love. Sex.” Fashionistas do Moscow; Demi dominates at dominoes.

Moscow in winter is hardly a party hot spot. But Valentino, Diane von Furstenberg, Lucy Liu and Eva Herzigova were among the fashion and Hollywood flock who journeyed there for the Love Ball, a benefit for Natalia Vodianova’s children’s aid charity, on an estate built by Catherine the Great.

Foreign guests were stunned by both the setting—a dramatic ice palace—and the money Russian attendees dropped at the auction. Imperia vodka chief Roustam Tariko gave $470,000 to name a newly discovered orchid; the wife of a small-town mayor paid $660,000 to appear in a British Vogue photo shoot with Vodianova and Herzigova; and the last look from Valentino’s final couture show sold for $880,000.

Back in Los Angeles, partygoers channeled the warmer climes of Cuba at a de Grisogono-sponsored dominoes night at the Beverly Hills Hotel benefiting the Art of Elysium. Befitting the pre-Fidel Havana theme, cigars and mambo beats filled the ballroom. Charlize Theron, Salma Hayek, Ashton Kutcher and Donna Karan all threw down tiles, and Demi Moore proved herself a ferocious competitor. “Now that you know the game, pick it up,” she ordered when the pace got a little too slow.

The same evening, the Gagosian Gallery drew Diane Keaton, Tilda Swinton and John Waters for the opening of Julian Schnabel’s new exhibit featuring paintings superimposed on X-rays, some of which the artist created while making The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. “I’m always thinking about the same things,” he said. “Life. Death. Love. Sex.”

Across the pond, Tod’s hosted the Whitechapel gallery’s annual Art Plus Film party. The affair included a viewing of Christian Marclay’s short film “Solo” and Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys spinning tunes for Margo Stilley, Jade Jagger and Will Young, among others.
