Cannes Do

“Like we have to pay for that,” laughed Stavros Niarchos.

The Cannes Film Festival is technically a cinematic competition, but that’s of little consequence to the fashion brands and designers who spent the week throwing parties. First up was Chopard with its annual bash at the Carlton, where Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek and Christina Ricci boogied to Andy Garcia’s band. Actor Omar Metwally, a festival newcomer, was a bit overwhelmed. “All I wanted to do was stay in my hotel room and hide,” he said.

The following night Tatiana Santo Domingo, Olympia Scarry and Tang Wei joined Catalina Sandino Moreno and Julia Ormond, who were celebrating their biopic, Che, on Alberta Ferretti’s yacht. And the next morning Natalia Vodianova boarded Diane von Furstenberg’s yacht for a relaxed lunch.

Thursday evening, Sharon Stone shared the stage with Madonna at amfAR’s 15th annual Cinema Against AIDS gala at Le Moulin de Mougins. “For those of you who thought we were two bitches who hated each other, I have news for you,” said Stone before auctioning off Madonna’s one-of-a-kind Chanel alligator bag, with the singer’s lip gloss and blotting papers still inside. Also up for grabs were a private two-song concert by Her Madgesty, a Dior diamond-encrusted phone and travel packages for Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks. “Like we have to pay for that,” laughed Stavros Niarchos.

Lou Doillon closed out the week by hitting Dior’s Eden Roc bash and toasting Naomi Campbell’s birthday at Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s fifth annual La Dolce Vita fete at the Bâoli. The designers tore up the dance floor as usual, while Kate Hudson and Lance Armstrong smooched in the crowd near Natalie Portman and Devendra Banhart. “I’ve got to wear this shirt again tomorrow,” said Armstrong, trying to avoid sloshing champagne. Perhaps Kate can introduce him to the joys of laundry service.
